Getting Settled In
Table of Contents
Wi-Fi
Stay connected during your stay! You’ll find the Wi-Fi network name and password posted on the fridge in the kitchen.
Heating Options
Indoor Enclosed Fireplace (For colder months): If you’re here during chilly weather, the fireplace is a great way to warm up. Follow these steps:
- Airflow: Slide the airflow lever to the left to fully open it. This helps the fire get enough oxygen to burn.
- Fire Setup: Place crumpled newspaper or firelighters at the bottom of the fireplace, then stack kindling (small sticks) on top. Add a few larger logs as well.
- Lighting: Light the newspaper or firelighters. Close the fireplace door securely and lock the handle.
- Regulating the Fire: After about 15-20 minutes, reduce the airflow by sliding the lever back to slow the burn and keep the fire steady.
- Spread the Heat: After 30-40 minutes, turn on the ceiling fan to help circulate the warm air around the room.
Tip: Don’t forget to bring some firewood in before dark. It can get chilly at night, and having a cozy fire going early can make all the difference!
Heaters in Bedrooms: Each bedroom has a heater stored in the wardrobe. Make sure to keep it clear of any objects, and always turn the heater off when leaving the room or going to bed. It’s both for safety and energy conservation.
Kitchen and Dining
We want you to feel at home in the kitchen, so feel free to make use of the basics we’ve provided.
Pantry Items
You’ll find spices, tea, coffee, and other basic staples like rice and flour. If you use any snacks or canned goods, you can leave a small donation in the piggy bank located in the pantry. This helps us restock for future guests!
Appliances
The kitchen is fully equipped for your cooking needs. Here are some instructions for using key appliances:
- Coffee Machine: The coffee machine is simple to use! Fill the water reservoir, add ground coffee or a pod (if it’s a pod machine), and press the “brew” button. You’ll have fresh coffee in minutes.
- Stove & Oven:
- Turn the dial to the desired temperature or setting for the stove burners. Wait for a few seconds for the burner to heat up.
- For the oven, preheat by selecting the temperature and waiting for the indicator light to turn off, signaling it’s ready.
- Dishwasher: Load the dishes, add detergent to the dispenser, close the door, and select the wash cycle (normal or eco cycles are the most efficient). Press “start” and let it do the work!
Entertainment and Technology
We have a few entertainment options to help you unwind and enjoy your stay indoors.
TV and Google Chromecast
You can stream your favorite shows and movies using Google Chromecast with Google TV. To use it:
Turn on the TV with the Google remote.
Open your favorite streaming app (like Netflix, YouTube, or Disney+).
If you want to stream from your phone, make sure it’s connected to the same Wi-Fi as the Chromecast. Open the app and tap the “cast” icon.
Tip: If you’re new to Chromecast, just ask Google Home: “Hey Google, how do I cast to the TV?”
Google Home Mini
The Google Home Mini is a voice-activated assistant that can help with various tasks or provide entertainment. Here are some commands to try:
- Music: Say, “Hey Google, play relaxing music” or “Hey Google, play jazz” for some background music while you unwind.
- Weather Updates: Need to know the weather? Ask, “Hey Google, what’s the weather today?”
- Robot Vacuum: For a bit of fun (and cleaning), say “Hey Google, start the vacuum,” and watch it do its thing!
Safety and Emergency Information
Your safety is important to us, so here’s what you need to know:
Fire Safety
Smoke Detectors: Smoke detectors are installed throughout the house. If the alarm goes off and it’s not a fire emergency, press the “hush” button on the detector or fan the smoke away (if it’s from cooking).
Fire Extinguisher: A fire extinguisher is located next to the fridge. Use it in case of a small fire by pulling the pin, aiming at the base of the fire, and squeezing the handle. There’s also a fire blanket in the laundry, which you can use to smother small fires.
In an emergency, evacuate the house and call 000 (the emergency services number in Australia).
First Aid Kit
A first aid kit is located in the pantry. If you use up the last of anything, please let us know so we can restock it.
Farm Animal Guidelines and Activities
We invite you to interact with our friendly farm animals! Here’s how you can participate:
Collecting Eggs
Feel free to collect fresh eggs from the chicken and duck coops. Use what you need for breakfast or any meals you’re preparing. If you’d rather not collect them, just let us know, and we’ll do it for you.
Feeding Chickens and Ducks
You can feed the chickens and ducks with safe food scraps like fruit peels and rice. Just place the scraps on the compost pile near the bin. Avoid giving them processed foods, salty snacks, or anything sugary.
Tucking in the Birds
At sunset, help tuck in the chickens and ducks. Here’s where they sleep:
- Hen Hideaway: Located behind the house, this is where you’ll find the Guineafowls and Olive Eggers.
- Love Nest: In the vegetable garden, where the Barbu d’Uccles roost.
For the ducks, go to Shahpar Pond and say, “Ducks, go to bed.” They’ll know it’s time to head inside, and you can close the door to keep them safe overnight. Let them out in the morning to roam!
Cows and Horses
- Cows: Call the cows to the fence with, “Come here!” You can feed them fruits and veggies like carrots or apple slices.
- Horses: Feel free to pet the horses, but be mindful of Pepper (the white horse), who doesn’t like being touched. Only feed them safe treats like apple slices (make sure the seeds are removed first).
Housekeeping and Environmental Care
We take pride in keeping the farm eco-friendly. Here’s how you can help during your stay:
Composting
Please compost food scraps like fruits, vegetables, eggshells, and coffee grounds. The indoor compost bin can be emptied into the compost bay behind the chicken coop when it’s full.
Rubbish and Recycling
There are separate bins for general waste and recyclables. Please place recyclable items (like paper, plastic bottles, and cans) in the appropriate bin. General waste goes in the regular bin.
Other Amenities and Features
BBQ
We have an outdoor BBQ available for your use. The BBQ instructions are located in the outdoor dining area. Remember to clean the grill after use, so it’s ready for the next guests.
Robot Vacuum
Before starting the robot vacuum, make sure the floors are clear of any cables, toys, or loose rugs that might get caught. Empty the vacuum’s dustbin if it’s full. Then you can either press the power button on the vacuum itself or say, “Hey Google, start the vacuum.”
Dishwasher
Using the dishwasher is easy! Here’s how:
Load the Dishwasher:
- Scrape off large food bits.
- Place larger items on the bottom rack, and cups/glasses on the top. Don’t block the spray arms.
Add Detergent:
- Use the detergent provided (under the sink), place it in the compartment, and close it.
Select a Cycle:
- Normal: For everyday loads.
- Eco: For lightly soiled dishes.
- Heavy: For pots and pans.
Start and Unload:
- Press “start” and wait for the cycle to finish. Unload the bottom rack first.
Tip: Clean the filter regularly and run an empty cycle with vinegar to keep it fresh!
Laundry
A washing machine and dryer are available in the laundry room. Detergent is provided. Feel free to use them if you need to do laundry during your stay.
Checking Out
Before you leave, please follow these simple steps:
Take All Your Belongings: Double-check all rooms and storage areas to make sure you’ve packed everything.
Towels: Please place all used towels in the laundry bag located in the laundry room.
Rubbish: Take out the rubbish and place it in the bins near the main road. Be sure to separate recyclables.
Extra Bedding: If you used any extra bedding from the wardrobe, leave it outside the wardrobe so it can be washed before being stored again.
Lock Up: Lock all doors and return the key to the keybox. Don’t forget to scramble the code for security.
